Commissioner for Scripted - TVNZ

Emma John is the Scripted Commissioner at TVNZ, overseeing the network’s slate of high-impact drama and comedy. She has developed and delivered some of Aotearoa’s most acclaimed scripted series, including A Remarkable Place to Die, The Gone, Educators, Dead Ahead, and Shortland Street.

Emma’s career in television began in the UK as a Script Supervisor on prestigious productions such as The Office, The Mighty Boosh, and Nighty Night. After returning to Aotearoa, she was the associate producer on 7 Days and the producer of Would I Lie to You, and was General Manager and Head of Programming at Sky TV’s start-up channel, Country Channel.

Appointed Commissioner for Scripted at TVNZ in 2022, Emma oversees a diverse portfolio of drama and comedy productions. A champion of creative excellence and commercial pragmatism, she is passionate about talent development and international co-productions that bring New Zealand stories to the world.

Emma joins the Commissioners’ Roundtable at the 30th SPADA Conference.
