Vale Sir Sam Neill

Sam Neill - IMDb
Spada pays tribute to Sir Sam Neill, acclaimed actor and New Zealand screen legend.

It is with profound sadness that we mark the passing of Sir Sam Neill, whose contribution to the art of screen performance spanned more than five decades and left an indelible mark on New Zealand's cinematic identity.

Sir Sam's career was distinguished not only by its extraordinary range — from period drama to science fiction, from psychological thriller to prestige television — but by the integrity with which he approached every role. He brought to each performance a rare combination of gravitas and restraint, qualities that made him equally at home in intimate independent productions and the largest stages of international cinema.

Sir Sam received multiple accolades for his contributions to the screen, including a trio of Golden Globe and a pair of Emmy Award nominations, along with six Logie nominations (including three wins) and many other nominations and awards at festivals in Aotearoa and abroad. In recognition of his vast body of work, he was honored with the prestigious Longford Lyall Award by the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) in 2019.

Beyond his individual achievements, Sir Sam's significance to New Zealand's screen industry cannot be overstated. He demonstrated, across the whole of his career, that a filmmaker or performer from this country could compete and excel on the world's stage while remaining rooted in the values and character of home. In 2022 Sir Sam was made a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (KNZM), when accepting his knighthood he was explicit that he did so not merely in recognition of his own achievements, but on behalf of the acting profession in Aotearoa as a whole — a gesture reflective of the generosity that defined his public life.

This enduring contribution was formally recognised only last year, when Sir Sam received the Screen Legend Award at the 2025 New Zealand Screen Awards — a fitting tribute, in retrospect, to a career that inlcuded several iconic roles and had already given so much to the industry he helped shape. The NZ On Screen Sir Sam Neill Collection illustrates the depth and breadth of Sir Sam's career in local productions, including classic Kiwi movies Sleeping Dogs, The Piano, and Hunt for the Wilderpeople. Sir Sam spoke with Guyon Espiner last year about his career and experiences.

Spada extends our deepest condolences to Sir Sam's family, friends, and collaborators. New Zealand's screen sector is immeasurably richer for his contribution, and immeasurably poorer for his loss.

Moe mai rā, Sir Sam Neill. 1947–2026.
