SPA Welcomes Announcement of Streaming Content Legislation

Congratulations to our friends at Screen Producers Australia – and the other Australian guilds - who have long and tirelessly championed legislation to ensure international streaming platforms contribute to local screen production.

Yesterday, the Albanese Government announced its planned introduction of long-awaited legislation to apply local content rules to streaming platforms. The fine print will be finalised once the bill clears Parliament, but there is no mistaking this as a major win for Australian producers and audiences alike. Further details here.

Here in New Zealand, streamers’ regulation is still sitting within the Government’s Media Reform Review, and we’re urging the Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage to keep things moving.

Spada’s campaign continues, and this Australian result lends even greater weight to our case.

New Zealand Screen Production Rebate (NZSPR) for international productions

Spada will be attending the ministerial announcement, hosted by Hon Nicola Willis, Minister for Economic Growth, regarding upcoming changes to the New Zealand Screen Production Rebate (NZSPR) for international productions, this Friday morning.

Our understanding is that the baseline rebate may be lifted to 25% - a change long advocated for, and more recently championed through Screen NZ International’s efforts. Like everyone else, we’ll wait to see the official announcement on Friday.

ENDS.
