SPADA E-NEWS #5
09 March 2007
Dear Members
Latest breaking positive news …
Drama Series Cancelled
In a positive turn around, TVNZ and NZ On Air announced yesterday they will not proceed with the production, or further funding, of the drama series The Point. Both organisations concluded budgets did not allow for sufficiently high production values. This is good, as NZ On Air’s $8.5m allocation for the cancelled drama becomes available for contestable independent ideas, and the remaining $2.9million committed by TVNZ will now also be available for other local drama and comedy ideas.
Acquisition of Back Catalogue and VOD Rights: TVNZ
TVNZ’s recent deal memo regarding the acquisition of back catalogue for its upcoming digital services and Video on Demand has resulted in a number of queries from members.
SPADA has been in discussions with TVNZ this week regarding the wording of this document, and will meet with them next week. We can advise that a new document will be issued next week, with clearer terms for digital and VOD downloads. We are also discussing with TVNZ the cost and feasibility of clearances.
Therefore, we advise members to wait for the revised version of the deal memo before responding to TVNZ.
3-Ways Contracts: TV3 Inside NZ
After discussions with NZ On Air and TV3, the new Inside New Zealand contracts have been issued to producers with some amended clauses. Discussions focussed on screening rights for TV3’s upcoming time shifted digital channel and streaming rights. Producers who haven’t already contacted SPADA regarding these contracts are free to do so.
NZ Festival Contracts: TVNZ
SPADA advises that TVNZ has adopted an interim position for digital plays in the new NZ Festival contracts; with full discussions on digital screening rights for new commissioning starting within a month. Once, again feel free to call if you have any questions.
