MEDIA RELEASES

New push for local content
(14 December 1999)

The film and television industry has united to produce a series of cinema trailers promoting local content on New Zealand's screens. The first three trailers will begin screening in Village Force Hoyts cinemas this week.

The trailers feature TV and radio presenters Mikey Havoc and Newsboy, rappers Phil Fuemana and Dei Hamo and award-winning musician Don McGlashan. All talk about their passion for creating new opportunities for audiences to see and hear New Zealand's people, stories and songs.

"People feel so strongly about this issue that everyone involved has donated their time and facilities", said Jane Wrightson, chief executive of the Screen Producers and Directors Association, which coordinated the production of the trailers. "With the increasing globalisation of the film, television and radio industries, it's vital that we focus on the individuality of our own culture. Ultimately it's what will create a competitive advantage for our country."

"We're very happy the new Government has indicated its intention to introduce local content quotas for television and radio", said Allison Enright, chair of the Green Ribbon Trust, which advocates on behalf of film and television groups on the quota issue. "The New Zealanders featuring in these trailers articulate why this move is so important", she said.

Five further trailers, featuring artists as diverse as Chris Knox and former Shortland Street star Angela Bloomfield will be released in the new year.
