Young Film Makers honoured
(20 October 2000)

The finalists for the prestigious SPADA Young Film Maker of the Year Award 2000 were announced today. The Award is the primary recognition in New Zealand for emerging film makers who have displayed special talent and creativity in their film making to date.

Four finalists were selected by a panel of industry professionals. The winner will be announced at the opening night of Small Country, Big Picture, the New Zealand film and television industry conference taking place in Auckland from 9 November.

The finalists are:

James Cunningham whose short film INFECTION screened in competition at Cannes in May and took two prizes at this year's Nokia New Zealand Film Awards.

Gregory King whose first film POP won the prize for 'Most Outstanding Achievement In A Video Production' at the Melbourne International Film Festival.

Hamish Rothwell, an award-winning commercials director whose debut feature film STICKMEN opens in the new year.

Paul Swadel, producer of INFECTION and director of several short films including ACCIDENTS which has screened at six international festivals.

Jury convenor Gordon Harcourt praised the very high quality of entries this year. 'My fellow judges Ruth Kaupua, Fane Flaws and Vanessa Alexander (who won this award in 1999) found it almost impossible to whittle down the applications to the four finalists. Choosing the winner was a real challenge', he said.

Screen Producers & Directors Association chief executive Jane Wrightson said that 'SPADA was constantly impressed by the level of craft skills achieved by emerging film makers in New Zealand. Along with the Award's sponsors, The Film Unit, Kodak, Panavision, FACB and Qantas NZ we are honoured to support the efforts of our younger film makers' she said.

The winner receives over $20,000 of cash and facilities for their next film project.
