HON. STEVE MAHAREY
Minister of Broadcasting

Hon. Steve MahareyHon Steve Maharey is Minister of Broadcasting, Minister for Social Development and Employment, Minister of Housing, Associate Minister of Education (Tertiary Education) and Minister responsible for the Tertiary Education Commission. Steve has been the Labour Member of Parliament for Palmerston North since 1990. In the Labour-Alliance Government (1999-2002) he held the social services and employment, associate education (tertiary education) and community and voluntary sector portfolios. In Opposition (1990-1999) Steve was variously the Opposition spokesperson for broadcasting, social welfare, employment, tertiary education, communications and labour relations. He has served on the broadcasting, social services, education and science, commerce, and justice and law reform Parliamentary select committees. Steve has a B.A. and an M.A. (Hons) in sociology. He was a senior lecturer in sociology at Massey University before entering Parliament. He has published widely in his specialist areas of interest: media and cultural studies and social change. Earlier in his academic career Steve also taught business administration.
