JULIAN MERCER
Executive Producer, BBC1/BBC2
Julian Mercer has worked for the BBC for 25 years. He was appointed Executive Producer of the observational documentaries unit of Documentaries & Contemporary Factual,
Bristol
in April 2002.
His most recent productions are “Seaside Rescue”, “Its Not Easy Being Green”, “Skint” and “A Life of Grime”
In his previous position as Series Producer in Bristol Obs Docs, credits include: “A Life of Grime” (Series 3, Summer 02); "Mr Trebus' Life of Grime" (May 2001); "Escape to the Sun", a series about ex-pats in Benidorm (Jan 2001); "When I Get Older...", an Education-funded series about older people needing health or social services support (BBC2 May 2000). Previous highlights include "A Life of Grime" (Series 1, 1999), "Vets in Practice" (1998), "Holiday Reps" (1997) and "The Big C", a BBC1 cancer awareness series in 1997.
Julian worked initially for BBC Wales as a radio researcher and producer then as sub-editor and duty editor in radio news. His television career began in the evening news programme, “Wales Today”, before moving into current affairs with BBC Wales' “Week In Week Out" where he won RTS Best Regional Programme in 1991 and a BAFTA Wales in 1992.
Julian has also gained Prix Leonardo awards for BBC1's "Gambling for Gorillas" (1995) and BBC2's "State of the
Ark
" (1994). "When I Get Older" was named Best Documentary in the Royal Television Society's Education awards of 2000.
